A beach day goes wrong in small ways: sunscreen left in a hot car, an umbrella that folds at noon, a cooler that turns to water by 1pm. Shade strategy, snack timing, sunscreen reapplication and the gear that keeps toddlers happy past noon.
We built this guide from three seasons of trips across Florida's Gulf coast, New South Wales and the Greek islands — with the same core kit each time so we could compare results honestly.

How we tested
Every cooler ran a 48-hour ice-melt test in 90°F sun with a fixed ice-to-air ratio. Umbrellas were staked in loose sand and measured against 25 mph gusts. Towels were weighed wet, then again after 20 minutes of shade drying.

How often should sunscreen be reapplied at the beach?
Every two hours, and immediately after swimming or towel-drying — even with water-resistant formulas, which are only rated for 80 minutes in water.
What size cooler fits a family of four for a full day?
A 25–35 quart cooler holds lunch, snacks and around 12 drinks with ice. Anything larger becomes hard to carry across soft sand without wheels.
How do I stop sand getting into everything?
Pack a small bottle of baby powder to brush sand off damp skin, keep a wet-dry bag for swimsuits, and choose flat-weave towels instead of terry.
